Aging and memory care issues have become one of the biggest challenges we face today. With minimal infrastructure and funding to support those with memory disorders, they often end up living with relatives or their children. Or they might live alone until it becomes unsafe for them, sometimes with drastic consequences. Those with memory issues can leave their homes and become lost or missing, can forget things on the stove and cause fires, can forget that they paid their bills and pay them twice. The risks of living with Alzheimer's/Dementia are significant, especially without support. But many of us are independent and want to keep our familiar lives the way they are, to stay home and continue to try and take care of ourselves. Many of those diagnosed with Alzheimer's/Dementia do not want to leave their homes, and when eventually they are forced to it comes with a lot of anger and sadness.

And Dementia doesn't just take a toll on the person who has it. The impact of one person's diagnosis can ripple throughout a family.

All along the evolution of these disorders, there will be grief and loss to deal with. When the worst happens, and our loved one passes away, there can be complicated emotions. Sometimes it's relief - they are no longer confused and struggling. Sometimes it might be anger - for the way they changed and treated us in the end, or for the way we had to watch them pass, slowly.

I strongly believe that memory care patients and their families are heavily overlooked by the mental healthcare system. Too often, "just dealing with it" is the expectation. The pain and struggle you feel in this situation is real, and I bet that for a long time you have bottled it up and just tried to move forward. You don't have to do that. I provide an experienced and empathic sounding board for you to discuss the difficulties you are facing, and how a diagnosis of Alzhemier's/Dementia has impacted you. Together, we can find ways to bring some light into the dark places of fear and sadness.
