Trauma Informed Practice (TIP)
Many people look back on their experiences, and don't necessarily assign the label "trauma" to the things they've been through. Some traumas may be more obvious, like deployment to an active military zone, or a sexual assault. However some traumas aren't that obvious, and we may only relate to them as stresses or bad experiences. When bad things happen to us, we can feel afraid, vulnerable, guilty, powerless, and angry. Our bodies and our brains react to things without our consent in order to survive. You may want to let go of a bad experience or trauma in your past, but it lingers anyways. It can invade your sleep, affect your body, direct your self image, and rule your emotions.
Even if we are not personally in danger, we can still experience trauma. Healthcare workers during the pandemic have experienced trauma while trying and often failing to save dying patients. Police, firefighters, social workers, and paramedics experience trauma when they witness death and devastation at their jobs. Foster and adoptive parents experience trauma as they provide a loving home and listening ear to children who have been abused and neglected. It's important to acknowledge Secondary Trauma to be just as real and valid as any other trauma, and to know that you can reach out for help.
Healing trauma doesn't always have to include rehashing what you've been through. If you would like to talk about it, I will hold a strong and calm place for you to do so. If you would rather not, or maybe are not ready to discuss the details, then I will help you explore what living with the trauma is like and how we can make it better. Whether you're a survivor of trauma or a witness to it, healing with my guidance and presence can help you put things behind you. Together, we can find a way to pull strength and meaning from what you've been through so that you can step out of the shadow that's been hanging over you, and finally breathe easy.
